New Delhi, March 16: In today’s fast-paced lifestyle, neglecting health has become common, leading to various diseases. One such seemingly ordinary yet serious health issue is blood pressure. According to the National Health Mission (NHM), blood pressure is a major cause of several serious physical and mental problems. High blood pressure is often referred to as a “silent killer” because most people do not exhibit symptoms, but if left uncontrolled, it can lead to heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, and other severe illnesses. Low blood pressure is also considered a slow poison.
The NHM states that timely check-ups and appropriate measures can easily control blood pressure. Ignoring high blood pressure is dangerous as it gradually damages arteries, increasing the risk of heart attacks, brain strokes, and kidney issues.
The NHM suggests simple and effective methods to control blood pressure, including:
1. Take Medication on Time: Never skip medication. Strictly follow the dosage and timing prescribed by your doctor. Initially, medications like Amlodipine are common. Lifestyle changes are also essential alongside medication.
2. Measure Blood Pressure Daily: Regular check-ups at home or health centers are crucial. Measure it in the morning and evening to keep track of your condition and inform your doctor promptly.
3. Limit Salt Intake: Keep daily salt consumption below 5 grams (one teaspoon). Reduce packaged foods, pickles, chips, and outside meals. Lowering salt can help decrease blood pressure.
4. Stay Hydrated: Drink 8-10 glasses of water daily. Dehydration can affect blood pressure. Water helps eliminate excess sodium from the body.
5. Exercise Regularly: Engage in brisk walking, cycling, yoga, or light exercises for 30-45 minutes daily. This helps maintain weight and can lower blood pressure.
Additionally, it is important to manage weight, quit smoking, reduce alcohol intake, consume more fruits and vegetables, and practice meditation or yoga to reduce stress. Regular check-ups and lifestyle changes can effectively control high blood pressure. If blood pressure remains uncontrolled, consult a doctor immediately.
