Guwahati, March 19: The Assam government has set up a special fast-track court to expedite the hearing of the high-profile case concerning the death of singer Zubeen Garg. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced this development on the social media platform X, describing it as a significant step towards justice. He stated that this decision would accelerate the legal process and help avoid prolonged delays.
In his post, CM Sarma remarked, “Today marks an important milestone in our collective effort for justice in the Zubeen Garg murder case. The Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court has assigned the responsibility of the fast-track court to District Judge Sharmila Bhuyan of Baksa district. This court will conduct daily trials on the matter, ensuring a quicker judicial process.”
The Chief Minister expressed gratitude to Justice Ashutosh Kumar and the Chief Justice for approving the establishment of this special court at the request of the state government, emphasizing that such initiatives would strengthen the justice system.
Zubeen Garg tragically drowned on September 19, 2025, near St. John’s Island in Singapore. Initially reported as a scuba diving accident, it later emerged that he was swimming without a life jacket and lost consciousness before drowning. However, allegations of foul play and conspiracy to murder have surfaced, prompting calls for a thorough investigation.
The Assam Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) has filed a charge sheet naming seven individuals as accused, with four facing murder charges, including an event organizer, Garg’s manager, a band member, and a co-singer. Serious charges have been filed against them. Additionally, a relative of Garg, who is a former police officer, has been accused of involuntary manslaughter.
In light of the ongoing demands from Garg’s family and supporters for a swift resolution to the case, the establishment of the fast-track court is seen as a relief.
