Sydney, March 21: Japan secured its third AFC Women’s Asian Cup title by defeating Australia 1-0 in the final held at Stadium Australia. This victory marks Japan’s third championship win in the tournament’s history, having previously triumphed in 2014 and 2018, both times against the same opponent.
The host nation, Australia, started the match strongly in front of a record crowd of 74,397, most of whom were supporting the Matildas. Striker Mary Fowler initiated a promising move with a precise long pass to Caitlin Ford, who created a great opportunity for captain Sam Kerr. However, Japan’s goalkeeper, Yamashita, made a brilliant save to deny the shot. Australia attempted to score again in the 11th minute, but Japan’s solid defense held firm.
Despite Australia’s early dominance, Japan struck first against the run of play in the 17th minute. Hamano created space outside the penalty area, turned quickly, and delivered a curling shot that found the bottom corner, leaving Mackenzie Arnold with no chance.
Following the goal, Japan controlled the pace of the game with their excellent passing. However, a misclearance by Yamashita gave Australia a golden opportunity to equalize when the ball fell to Ford. Ford’s shot was deflected by Hana Takahashi, preserving Japan’s lead.
In the dying moments of the first half, Japan had another chance to double their advantage. A defensive error allowed Hikaru Kitagawa a clear shot on goal, but Arnold thwarted the attempt.
The second half progressed rapidly, with Japan searching for a second goal while Australia gradually began to control the ball and create scoring opportunities. After regaining possession in midfield, Kyra Cooney-Cross attempted a long-range shot but failed to trouble Yamashita, who easily saved it.
In the final stages of the match, Japan adopted a defensive strategy, successfully repelling all of Australia’s attempts to equalize.
