Guwahati, April 3: A BJP candidate expressed gratitude to Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his upcoming visit to the district ahead of the assembly elections scheduled for April 9. The candidate, Tankeshwar Rabha, thanked Shah for his ‘guidance’ during a press interaction.
Highlighting the issue of illegal immigration in Assam, Rabha urged for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Shah addressed a public rally in Dudhnoi, Golpara, as part of the BJP’s campaign for the state elections.
Rabha, contesting from the Dudhnoi seat, noted that this is the first time a Union Home Minister has visited the area, marking a significant moment for the locals who feel guided by his presence. He pointed out that illegal immigration from Bangladesh has become a major concern in the district, further emphasizing the need for UCC.
“There are many infiltrators in Golpara district, making the implementation of UCC crucial. The tribal population here is quite low. It’s not that their population hasn’t grown, but infiltrators have taken away our culture, heritage, identity, and land,” Rabha stated.
He further mentioned that Amit Shah has clarified that UCC will not apply to tribal people and accused the current Congress MP, Abdur Rashid Mandal, of not standing with the tribal population.
Rabha criticized the Congress MP, stating, “What has he done in the last five years? Not a single road has been built here. The forests are the heart of this place. Infiltrators have illegally occupied those forests. Congress is not standing with the tribals.” He also noted that during his rally, Shah accused Congress of turning Assam into a hub for infiltrators.
