New Delhi, May 12: The Foreign Minister of the Republic of Maldives, Iruthisham Adam, arrived in India on Tuesday for a three-day official visit. According to the scheduled program, she is set to meet her Indian counterpart, S. Jaishankar, and Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal.
As per a release from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, Adam will be in India from May 12 to 14, landing at Indira Gandhi International Airport at 5:20 PM on Tuesday.
On Wednesday at 4 PM, she will meet with Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar at Hyderabad House. Following this, on May 13, an important meeting is planned with Minister Piyush Goyal at the Ministry of Commerce.
The Maldives Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also issued a statement regarding this visit, marking it as Adam’s first official trip since taking office. She received the invitation to visit India from Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar. The primary aim of the visit is to further strengthen bilateral relations.
During her visit, Iruthisham will hold bilateral meetings with Jaishankar, providing an opportunity for ministers to review bilateral and multilateral cooperation and discuss specific issues of mutual interest.
Accompanying Iruthisham are Dr. Ibrahim Zuhuri, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Assistant Director Aminath Guraisha. The Maldives considers India its closest ally, with both nations connected through strong cultural, economic, and social ties.
Following initial tensions in 2024, the Maldives has made significant efforts to normalize its relations. The administration of President Muizzu has taken several steps to strengthen bilateral ties with India. Muizzu has visited India officially twice, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the Maldives’ Independence Day celebrations in 2025.
Iruthisham, who recently became Foreign Minister, has extensive diplomatic experience, having previously served as the Maldives’ High Commissioner in the United Kingdom.
