Srinagar, May 14: Political tensions are escalating in Jammu and Kashmir regarding the delayed payments to contractors working under the Jal Jeevan Mission. Iltija Mufti has criticized the government, alleging that payments have been pending for a long time, putting contractors in financial distress. She accused the government of negligence and corruption.
Mufti stated that despite taking loans from banks, contractors have not received payments for two years and urged the government to address their grievances. Meanwhile, protests by contractors have continued for the fifth day.
In a media interaction, they expressed frustration over the lack of payment for their work on the Jal Jeevan Mission. With the government in power for two years, their payments remain stalled, causing significant distress due to debts. The Jammu and Kashmir government has mentioned that payments will be made after signing an agreement.
Mufti questioned the government’s inaction, noting that despite the ongoing protests, no officials have come to meet the contractors. She emphasized that they are not there for political gain but are seeking resolution for their issues.
She also called for an investigation if any scam has occurred, asserting that those who have worked deserve their payments. Criticizing the government led by Omar Abdullah, she claimed it has failed in multiple sectors, including education, and is plagued by corruption.
Mufti concluded by questioning why the government is not listening to the contractors, suggesting that it has become unresponsive and is failing to function effectively, with corruption rampant at all levels.
