Fortis Hospital Denies Allegations Over Missing Watch of Deceased Patient

Bengaluru, May 22: Fortis Hospital, Nagarbhavi, has denied allegations regarding the disappearance of a costly Rado watch (valued at approximately ₹1.80 lakh) and a half-sleeve sweater belonging to the late K. Ramayya during his treatment. The hospital administration issued a clarification on Friday in response to the claims made by social activist K. Ramayya’s daughter, Anita Ramayya, who released a video appealing for the return of her father’s watch, emphasizing its emotional significance as one of his last memories.

The Govindarajanagar police have registered an FIR against unknown individuals under Section 303(2) of the Indian Penal Code and have begun an investigation.

In its statement, Fortis Hospital expressed condolences to K. Ramayya’s family and stated that it has conducted an internal inquiry, sharing all available information with the family and police. According to the hospital, no complaints regarding missing valuables were reported by the family at the time the body was handed over on January 15, 2026.

The hospital noted that the formal complaint regarding the missing watch and sweater was filed more than two months later, on April 24, 2026, and that the records were no longer available due to the hospital’s 30-day CCTV data retention policy.

Despite the delay in the complaint, the hospital confirmed that it conducted an internal investigation, verified available records, and provided necessary information to the investigating agencies. Fortis Hospital also mentioned that Ramayya had previously visited another healthcare facility before being brought to their hospital.

The hospital stated that the matter is currently under police investigation, and they are fully cooperating. They urged against making “speculative and unverified allegations,” noting that such claims could be defamatory.

Earlier, Anita Ramayya had reported that her father collapsed suddenly due to a severe health issue on January 15 and was brought to Fortis Hospital after being denied initial treatment at another private hospital. She mentioned that her father had the Rado watch and sweater at that time, but both items were missing upon his death.

In her video released on Friday, Anita stated that she has repeatedly requested the hospital and police to investigate and provide CCTV footage. “I just want my father’s watch back. It’s not about the price; it’s about the memories. I am still struggling to cope with my father’s death,” she said.

The police have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
