Chandigarh, May 25: Fuel prices have seen another increase on Monday, with petrol prices rising by ₹2.61 per litre and diesel by ₹2.71 per litre. This marks the fourth increase in fuel prices in the last ten days. Opposition parties have targeted the central government, describing the rising costs as an additional burden on the common people, farmers, and small traders.
In an exclusive conversation with a news agency in Jhajjar, Congress MLA Geeta Bhukkal expressed concern over the continuous rise in petrol and diesel prices. She stated that this is the fourth consecutive increase, leading to heightened inflation. The rising costs are directly impacting farmers and the general public. She also raised questions about the supply of petrol and diesel, noting that there are claims of limited fuel availability in Chandigarh.
Bhukkal highlighted that the expenses for food items and even restaurant bills are increasing, affecting social activities as well. She mentioned that community meals (langars) in several areas are also being impacted. She urged the government to take this issue seriously, stating that merely protesting by cycling will not resolve the problem. While the government talks about ‘work from home,’ delivery and transport workers cannot do so, and their difficulties must also be addressed.
Meanwhile, Anurag Dhanda, a leader of the Aam Aadmi Party in Rohtak, pointed out that fuel prices have increased by approximately ₹7.5 in the last ten days. He accused the government of gradually imposing a burden on the public through daily price hikes. Dhanda warned that if this trend continues, petrol prices could reach ₹150 per litre, making it difficult for the common man to afford vehicle operation.
He noted that poor individuals who ride motorcycles will struggle to refuel, and drivers of autos and trucks are also facing challenges. According to him, the rising fuel prices are visibly affecting businesses and daily expenses, exacerbating the economic difficulties faced by the general public.
