Assam Congress MLA Criticizes UCC Bill for Lack of Equality

Guwahati, May 25: Congress MLA Jubair Anam criticized the Assam government’s move to introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill in the state assembly on Monday. He alleged that several provisions of the proposed law lack equality.

In response to the bill’s introduction in the assembly, the Congress MLA stated that many provisions of the proposed law appear unequal and require detailed discussion during the assembly proceedings. He emphasized that the bill is not uniform in itself, highlighting that various issues within it are not equal. He indicated that the opposition would raise its concerns during the discussion on the proposed law in the assembly.

Other Congress legislators also criticized the bill, asserting that the party would oppose any law that interferes with the religious practices of minorities.

The Assam government presented the ‘Uniform Civil Code Bill, 2026’ in the assembly on Monday. Minister Atul Bora introduced the law on behalf of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The ruling BJP claims that the proposed UCC law will ensure equality and bring uniformity in civil matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption. However, opposition parties have expressed concerns about the proposed law, arguing that some of its provisions could affect the rights and customs of different communities.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that introducing this bill in the assembly opens the way for a recorded discussion on why the UCC is necessary and how it aligns with the vision of the country’s founders.

The Chief Minister also mentioned on X that the introduction of the ‘Uniform Civil Code 2026 Bill’ in the Assam assembly paves the way for a recorded discussion on why the UCC is essential for Assam today and how it will help realize the path shown by our founders.
