Washington, May 26: In a significant diplomatic development amidst rising tensions in the Middle East, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov over the phone. The two leaders discussed the Russia-Ukraine war, their bilateral relations, and the situation in Iran.
According to the U.S. State Department, the conversation took place at Lavrov’s request. Rubio is currently on a four-day visit to India, where he is set to participate in the Quad meeting alongside foreign ministers from India, Japan, and Australia, hosted by India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott provided details about the conversation, stating, “Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov today at his request.” He further noted that both sides shared their views on the Russia-Ukraine war, bilateral relations, and the situation in Iran.
This brief exchange is seen as an indication that despite the tensions following the Ukraine war, communication channels between Washington and Moscow remain open. Rubio, who served as Secretary of State during the Trump administration, has been engaged in ongoing diplomatic discussions on various international issues over the past few weeks. His recent conversation with Lavrov comes at a time when there is renewed discussion about the direction of the Ukraine war and security situations in Europe and the Middle East.
However, the statement from the State Department did not clarify whether the two leaders discussed sanctions, military aid, ceasefire proposals, or any potential agreements related to Ukraine and Iran. The Trump administration has previously stated its desire to end the Russia-Ukraine war through dialogue, while also maintaining pressure on Iran regarding its regional stance and nuclear program.
The Ukraine war, which began in February 2022, has significantly impacted global security arrangements and has led to considerable fluctuations in the global economy, particularly in energy and food markets.
