New Delhi, March 26: In today’s fast-paced lifestyle, many individuals are falling prey to various health issues due to prolonged sitting at work and an unregulated daily routine. Yoga poses offer an effective solution to strengthen the body and calm the mind. One significant pose in this regard is the Purvottanasana.
Regular practice of this pose enhances body flexibility and alleviates numerous health problems, making it particularly beneficial for those with desk jobs.
The name Purvottanasana is derived from two words: “Purva,” meaning the front part of the body, and “Uttana,” meaning stretched. This pose not only improves physical health but also helps in relieving stress.
Spending just 10-15 minutes practicing yoga can lead to long-term fitness benefits in a busy lifestyle. Purvottanasana is advantageous for both physical and mental health.
The Ministry of AYUSH has recognized it as an important yoga pose. According to them, this asana balances the body’s weight on the hands and feet, primarily strengthening the muscles of the hands, wrists, back, thighs, and shoulders. It promotes energy flow, enhances spinal flexibility, and improves abdominal muscles.
Practicing Purvottanasana applies pressure on the abdomen, strengthening the abdominal muscles and reducing fat around the belly. Additionally, it increases the body’s flexibility, leading to better energy circulation.
To perform this pose, lie on your back on the ground with your legs straight and arms at your sides. Gradually bring your hands closer to your shoulders while keeping your palms on the ground. Inhale and press your hands and feet down to lift your body upwards, arching your back, shoulders, and waist as much as possible to form a bridge-like shape. Tilt your head back and lift your chest. Hold this position for 15 to 30 seconds while breathing normally, then slowly lower your body back down and relax.
Avoid this pose if you have neck or wrist injuries, and consider practicing it under the supervision of a yoga instructor initially.
