Indian Navy Receives New Warship Mahendragiri

New Delhi, April 30: The Indian Navy is set to welcome a new warship, ‘Mahendragiri’, into its fleet. This stealth frigate was handed over to the Indian Navy on Thursday and will be commissioned as ‘INS Mahendragiri’. The vessel has been constructed in India, marking a significant achievement for Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, reinforcing the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives.

On April 30, the fourth stealth frigate built under Project 17A was delivered to the Indian Navy. The event was attended by Captain Jagmohan (Retd.), Chairman and Managing Director of the company, and Rear Admiral Gautam Marwaha, Chief Staff Officer (Technical) of the Eastern Naval Command, who signed the acceptance documents. The ceremony took place at Mazagon Dock.

Captain Jagmohan remarked that the delivery of ‘Mahendragiri’ represents a crucial milestone in India’s maritime shipbuilding sector. He expressed pride in this achievement for Mazagon Dock, highlighting it as an exemplary display of teamwork, dedication, and professional excellence. The successful completion of this complex and modern warship involved significant contributions from various teams, including Mazagon Dock, the Warship Design Bureau, the Navy’s monitoring team, and different departments of the Indian Navy.

He noted that ‘Mahendragiri’ is not just a state-of-the-art warship but also a powerful symbol of India’s indigenous defense manufacturing capabilities. Equipped with modern combat capabilities, it is designed to perform exceptionally well at sea. He expressed confidence that this ship would be a source of pride for its commanding officer and crew, enhancing the nation’s reputation through its outstanding performance. The delivery of ‘Mahendragiri’ marks the completion of all ships being built at Mazagon Dock under Project 17A.

This achievement is of great significance for India as it reflects the country’s growing technological capabilities, self-reliance, and strength in the defense sector. On the same day, a crucial meeting took place at the Coast Guard Headquarters in New Delhi between the Indian Coast Guard and a leading shipbuilding company from Italy. The high-level delegation from Italy included senior officials from the company, and this dialogue is seen as a vital step towards strengthening India’s maritime security and indigenous capability development.

During the meeting, both parties discussed potential collaborations with Indian shipyards for future projects, particularly focusing on modern ship design technologies. Key components of modern ship design include robust structures capable of withstanding high sea waves, increased capacity, advanced firefighting systems, and hybrid or electric propulsion systems. These technologies will not only enhance safety but also improve energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.

Additionally, discussions were held on the concept of modular ship design, allowing a single platform to be easily adapted for various types of missions, thereby increasing the operational flexibility and speed of the Coast Guard. The meeting also addressed advanced technologies under indigenous development and co-development, including dynamic positioning systems, modern thrusters, AI-based systems, anti-drone technology, and next-generation green propulsion solutions.
