Only Ashwagandha Roots Safe for Use: AYUSH Ministry

New Delhi, May 8: Ashwagandha is regarded as one of India’s oldest and most trusted herbs, commonly used for reducing stress, improving sleep, and enhancing physical strength. However, a crucial update regarding its usage has emerged, which is essential for everyone to understand.

The AYUSH Ministry recently posted on the social media platform X, stating that only the root and its extracts of Ashwagandha are considered safe for use. The leaves of the plant have not been deemed appropriate for traditional use nor found scientifically safe. The ministry clarified that many products are using the leaves, which are not suitable for health. Consequently, the AYUSH Ministry and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) have jointly established regulations that only the root and its standard extracts should be utilized.

The root of Ashwagandha is regarded as its most medicinally potent part. For centuries, it has been used to combat weakness, reduce stress, and boost energy. Modern research also confirms that the root contains elements that help the body fight stress. Many individuals consume it to improve sleep quality, enhance concentration, and reduce mental fatigue.

However, problems arise when people begin using any part of the plant without complete information. Therefore, if someone is taking Ashwagandha supplements or powder, they should ensure that it contains only root extract and no leaf mixture. Using the wrong parts can lead to adverse effects on the body and prevent one from reaping its full benefits.

Research on Ashwagandha is ongoing worldwide. Various international studies have shown that when used correctly and in appropriate amounts, it can help improve the body’s immunity, energy levels, and mental health. However, like any herb, it is crucial to use it in its correct form and balanced quantity.

The government and scientific institutions are continuously working in this direction to ensure that herbal products remain safe and certified. Therefore, consumers should also remain vigilant and check the ingredients of any product before purchasing it.
