Mumbai, May 28: Actor Pankaj Kapoor has lived his craft not just as a profession but as an art form. The characters he portrayed continue to resonate with audiences, from the famous TV detective ‘Karamchand’ to the troubled ‘Musaddi Lal’ confronting a corrupt system.
Kapoor took on numerous serious and powerful roles, often rehearsing dozens of times to ensure authenticity. While other actors sometimes grew weary, Pankaj would not rest until the scene matched his vision perfectly. This relentless pursuit of perfection became his hallmark.
Born on May 29, 1954, in Ludhiana, Punjab, Kapoor was drawn to acting and the stage from a young age. Despite excelling academically, his passion for performance led him to enroll in the National School of Drama (NSD), where he honed his skills. After graduating, he spent several years in theatre, with colleagues noting his dedication to perfecting every dialogue until he was completely satisfied.
His hard work eventually paved the way for a successful film career, starting with a significant role in Richard Attenborough’s film ‘Gandhi,’ where he played the character Pyarelal Nayar. He later appeared in acclaimed films such as Shyam Benegal’s ‘Aarohan,’ ‘Mandi,’ and Kundan Shah’s ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro.’
In the film ‘Ek Doctor Ki Maut,’ Kapoor portrayed scientist Dr. Dipankar Roy, dedicating extensive time to research for the role. It is said that he kept himself somewhat isolated during shooting to convey the character’s loneliness and struggle effectively. His performance earned him a National Film Award.
Similarly, for his role as ‘Abba Jahangir Khan’ in the film ‘Maqbool,’ he altered his walking, speaking, and sitting styles to embody the character fully.
Kapoor’s journey in television has also been remarkable. Shows like ‘Karamchand,’ ‘Mungeri Lal Ke Haseen Sapne,’ and ‘Office Office’ made him a household name, especially his memorable portrayal of Musaddi Lal in ‘Office Office.’ Even during comedic scenes, he approached each moment with seriousness, often eliciting laughter from the crew with his impeccable timing and expressions.
Throughout his career, Pankaj Kapoor has won three National Film Awards and a Filmfare Award. He is recognized as an actor capable of transforming himself entirely for a role. In addition to acting, he has ventured into directing and writing, with his film ‘Mausam’ gaining considerable attention, featuring his son Shahid Kapoor in the lead role.
