Ujjain takes pride as its senior archaeologist, Dr. Narayan Vyas, has been awarded the prestigious Padma Shri 2026, recognising his outstanding contributions to archaeology, history, and Cultural Heritage preservation.
Dr. Vyas has played a vital role in bringing the ancient heritage of not only Ujjain but the entire Malwa region to national and international attention. His research has given new direction to the identification of numerous historical sites, while also raising awareness about the importance of cultural preservation among the public.
Even after retirement, Dr. Vyas remained actively engaged in Archaeology, dedicating his time to heritage conservation and educational efforts. The announcement of the Padma Shri has sparked joy and pride throughout Ujjain, with historians, intellectuals, researchers, and citizens congratulating him and acknowledging this as a significant achievement for the city.
Dr. Vyas expressed his gratitude and said the honour reflects years of hard work and dedication. He shared, “I had been applying for this award since 2017. My father was a freedom fighter who hoisted the tricolour in Ujjain on 15 August 1947. He collected antiques, which deeply influenced me and led me to join the archaeology department.”
He added that post-retirement, he fully devoted himself to archaeology and actively participated in awareness campaigns related to heritage conservation. He regularly educated young people about the significance of archaeology and organised exhibitions to help the new generation connect with their historical roots.
Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ campaign, Dr. Vyas said he was inspired by a song that highlighted the soil of sacrifice. Motivated by this, he collected soil samples from around 150 locations, including lesser-known sites and places associated with freedom fighters. To date, he has organised about 40 exhibitions on this theme.
TrendingDr. Vyas thanked the Prime Minister for initiatives that honour those who contributed to the nation and society in anonymity. He emphasised that the Padma Shri is not only a personal accolade but also recognition of efforts to preserve Ujjain and Malwa’s historical heritage.
