Mumbai, May 6: The Hindi film industry has a long tradition of addressing social and sensitive issues through cinema. In this context, the comedy-drama film ‘Dukaan’ has received a warm response from audiences upon its release. The film is based on the complex and emotional subject of surrogacy.
Notably, the film premiered at Japan’s prestigious ‘4th Yokohama International Film Festival.’ The red carpet event took place on May 2, followed by an official screening at the ‘Betty and Deck Theatre’ on May 4, where the audience gave a standing ovation.
The filmmakers shared their experience, stating, “Receiving love from Japanese audiences has been a memorable experience for us. This is a prestigious festival, and just being here is a significant achievement.”
Directed by Siddharth Singh and Garima Wahal, the filmmakers explained why the story of surrogacy is close to their hearts. They remarked, “As writers, we nurture our script like a child, but ultimately, we have to hand it over to someone else. This emotional connection inspired us to create ‘Dukaan.'”
The film revolves around Jasmine (played by Monica Panwar), who opens a ‘shop of hopes’ for childless couples through surrogacy but later faces emotional struggles.
Set against the backdrop of Gujarat, the film features Monica Panwar, Sikandar Kher, Soham Majumdar, and Monali Thakur in lead roles, with actor Vrajesh Hirji making a special cameo. Produced under the banners of Webband Productions and Kalmakar Picture Productions by A. Jhunjhunwala and S.K. Ahluwalia, the cinematography by Anirban Chatterjee and music by Shreyas Puranik further enhance the film’s emotional depth.
This film not only entertains but also sheds light on aspects of surrogacy that are often overlooked.
