Accusations Fly During India Block Elections: Danish Azad Ansari

New Delhi, May 8: During the India Block elections, accusations have been exchanged among political leaders, according to Danish Azad Ansari, a minister in the Uttar Pradesh government. His comments followed a meeting between Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, as well as statements made by AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi.

Ansari noted that the largest party in the coalition, Congress, has also made statements against Banerjee’s government in West Bengal, with Rahul Gandhi labeling it as corrupt. He remarked that coalition partners appear confused about their positions.

JD(U) spokesperson Neeraj Kumar responded to Owaisi’s remarks regarding ‘Vande Mataram’, stating that the country does not favor politics of extremism. He emphasized that both ‘Vande Mataram’ and ‘Jana Gana Mana’ are integral to India’s national identity and command deep respect among citizens.

Uttar Pradesh minister O.P. Rajbhar also weighed in, asserting that India is a nation of all religions where people worship in churches, gurdwaras, mosques, and temples. He questioned why there should be objections to saying ‘Vande Mataram’, insisting that it must be acknowledged if one wishes to live in India.

Owaisi had previously objected to a central cabinet decision that proposed granting ‘Vande Mataram’ the same legal protection as the national anthem ‘Jana Gana Mana’, arguing that the song cannot be equated with the anthem as it is a hymn to a goddess. He stated that the country does not operate under the name of any deity.

Further commenting on the political landscape, Rajbhar noted that his party has emerged as the largest and that the governor must now make a decision regarding the formation of the government. He added that being the largest party should afford them the opportunity to form a government and prove their majority.

Rajbhar also took a jab at Akhilesh Yadav’s meeting with Banerjee, suggesting that Yadav, who has faced defeats in both 2017 and 2024 elections, was merely trying to console Banerjee by indicating that she has lost only once.
