New Delhi, May 29: A tragic incident occurred in the Hauz Khas area of Delhi on Thursday night, resulting in the death of retired IAS officer and former chairman of the Competition Commission of India (CCI), Dhanendra Kumar. Preliminary reports indicate that the fire broke out following an explosion in the air conditioning unit. Kumar’s son was also injured and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
According to Delhi police, the fire started around 11:18 PM at Kumar’s residence, where five people, including family members and domestic staff, were present. Emergency services, including police and fire department teams, arrived promptly to rescue those trapped inside and to control the blaze.
Authorities reported that 80-year-old Dhanendra Kumar and his son were evacuated and taken to a nearby hospital, where Kumar succumbed to his injuries. It is believed that excessive smoke inhalation worsened his condition. His son’s health is now reported to be stable.
Police and forensic teams have initiated an investigation at the scene. Initial findings suggest that the fire may have originated from the indoor unit of the air conditioning system. Currently, there are no indications of foul play or sabotage.
