Kolkata, June 3: Amidst the resignation news of Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim, political rhetoric in West Bengal has intensified. Minister Agnimitra Paul has raised questions regarding the behavior of Firhad Hakim and several councilors associated with the former ruling establishment in a post on the social media platform ‘X’.
In her post, Agnimitra Paul stated that Firhad Hakim’s resignation and the absence of several representatives raise serious questions about public accountability and political responsibility. She emphasized that any public position is not merely a symbol of power but also carries a serious responsibility to serve the public, especially when the city is facing challenges.
Paul pointed out that Kolkata is currently undergoing a critical phase. With the onset of the monsoon, the city faces numerous challenges such as waterlogging, drainage management, public health, road maintenance, and emergency preparedness. During such times, citizens expect their elected representatives to stand by them and ensure the smooth functioning of civic amenities. Instead, the public has witnessed a retreat from responsibility.
She noted that political differences and electoral victories or defeats are part of democracy, but governance and public service cannot be abandoned because of them. Agnimitra Paul highlighted the distinction between political affiliation and public duty. While political circumstances may change, the responsibility towards the public remains constant. Resigning at such a time sends a message that political equations are prioritized over public welfare. People elected their representatives for the entire term, expecting them to work for the city’s development regardless of political circumstances.
Agnimitra Paul concluded by stating that true leadership is identified not in favorable conditions but during crises and uncertainties. The city cannot be held hostage to political calculations. Roads, drainage, public services, and civic amenities must continue to function under all circumstances. Kolkata will move forward, development will continue, and public service will persist. However, this entire episode serves as a reminder that the trust bestowed by the public comes with great responsibility, which cannot be abandoned at convenience.
