New Delhi, April 28: The fifth special session of the Delhi Assembly commenced on Tuesday, with heightened security measures in place. Several critical issues are being discussed in the house.
BJP legislators arrived with black armbands to protest the recent rejection of the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha. Under Rule 280, they are raising local issues while wearing these armbands. The session will later address the Nari Shakti Vandan Act.
The assembly observed a moment of silence for the passing of playback singer Asha Bhosle and paid tribute to Indian soldiers who died in World War I. Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta noted that a historic war conference was held in the same chamber 108 years ago on April 28, 1918, attended by 120 representatives from across the country.
Minister Pravesh Verma spoke to reporters about the Women’s Reservation Bill, stating, “Today’s special session of the Delhi Assembly follows the opposition’s united protest against the Nari Shakti Vandan Act in Parliament. The Prime Minister has worked for years to ensure that the voices of women, who were previously unheard, reach the national parliament. The opposition has shattered the dreams of millions of women today. A condemnation motion will be introduced to send a message that our party and government stand with women.”
Minister Kapil Mishra emphasized the significance of the special session, stating that it presents a historic opportunity for the national parliament to express gratitude and respect towards women. He added that the Chief Minister would present a proposal regarding the betrayal felt by women.
BJP legislator Abhay Verma expressed concern over the disappointment among women in Delhi, noting that the Chief Minister, who also oversees the Women and Child Development Department, would convey their sentiments in the assembly.
Legislator Harish Khurana criticized the opposition for denying women’s rights through the Women’s Reservation Bill, asserting that the public will not tolerate this. He stated that the session was called to introduce and pass a condemnation motion to ensure women receive their rights.
Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa accused the Congress party of depriving half of India‘s population of their rights, asserting that a condemnation motion will be presented against the betrayal of women.
Prior to the special session, BJP legislators, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, protested in Parliament against the failure to pass the Women’s Reservation Bill.
