Tensions Erupt in Asansol Over Loudspeaker Dispute

Asansol, May 16: Tensions flared in Asansol, West Bengal, following a clash between police and local residents over the volume of a mosque loudspeaker. The situation escalated when some individuals reportedly attacked a police station and vandalized property.

The conflict arose from a complaint regarding the loudspeaker’s volume, prompting police action to reduce the noise. This led to unrest in the Jahangir Mohalla and surrounding areas. Angry locals allegedly assaulted a police station, resulting in police resorting to lathi charge to control the situation. Additional forces have since been deployed to maintain order.

Asansol’s Deputy Commissioner of Police, V.G. Satish Pasumarthy, stated that the situation is now under control and that there are no further issues. He added that authorities are reviewing CCTV footage to identify those involved and legal action will be taken against all participants in the incident.

A local resident mentioned that the dispute began over the loudspeaker volume during prayers in Azad Basti. He expressed concern over the actions of the youths, stating, “They should have engaged in dialogue instead of resorting to violence. Destroying the police station is unacceptable.”

Congress councillor S.M. Mustafa from Ward No. 25 commented on the incident, noting that they were unaware of the underlying reasons for the altercation. He emphasized the need for calm and urged residents not to pay attention to rumors, assuring that the situation in Asansol is stable and there are no ongoing problems.
