
New Delhi, January 10. The Delhi Police have intensified their operations in connection with the violence that erupted near the Faiz-e-Elahi mosque during an anti-encroachment drive in the Turkman Gate area, leading to the arrest of three more suspects. This brings the total number of arrests in the case to 16.
The police reported that the latest arrests were made on Friday night. The arrested individuals have been identified as Mohammad Naveed (44), Mohammad Faiz (20), and Mohammad Ubaidullah (23), all residents of the Turkman Gate vicinity. These three were reportedly involved in throwing stones during the incident.
The Delhi Police continue to actively pursue all individuals involved in the violence. Tensions in the area have escalated in recent days, prompting earlier arrests of several suspects. The latest detentions are expected to expedite the ongoing investigation.
According to reports, the violence broke out when a municipal team was conducting an anti-encroachment operation near the Faiz-e-Elahi mosque. During this operation, some miscreants began to throw stones, resulting in injuries to several police personnel and damage to government property. The First Information Report indicates that around 12:40 AM, a group of 30-35 people gathered during the police’s barricading efforts on the encroached land, chanting provocative slogans and attempting to obstruct police operations.
The investigation has also revealed that some influential local figures incited residents via WhatsApp groups to gather and protest against the operation. According to police, their intention was to create unrest during the operation and disrupt the work of the administration and law enforcement agencies.
