Mumbai, May 5: Renowned writer, lyricist, and musician Swanand Kirkire is reuniting with acclaimed filmmaker Sudhir Mishra for the upcoming political drama series ‘Summer of 77’. Kirkire shared his thoughts on working with Mishra, highlighting the unique experience it offers.
Kirkire described his collaboration with Mishra as special, stating, “Sudhir Mishra presents stories with honesty and depth, which gives him a distinct identity. Working with such a director is always a learning experience, as he understands every aspect with sensitivity and translates that onto the screen.”
The duo has previously collaborated on several memorable projects, including the popular song “Bawra Mann” from ‘Hazaaron Khwahishen Aisi’ and the film ‘Khoya Khoya Chand’.
Kirkire mentioned, “‘Summer of 77’ is my and Sudhir Mishra’s fifth project together. One of Sudhir’s strengths is that he gives music ample space in his films. In today’s times, music often becomes a mere formality, but Sudhir makes it an essential part of the story. When a director trusts music, it inspires a musician to create something new.”
The series is set against the backdrop of the Emergency period from 1975 to 1977 and consists of eight episodes that will showcase the thoughts, rebellions, dreams, and identity searches of the youth from that era.
Kirkire added, “After my last film ‘Bandwale’, I was looking for a project where music would be integral to the story. ‘Summer of 77’ provided that opportunity. Creating music for such a narrative is not easy, as it is crucial to capture the essence of that time. This series tells the story of an era where music, poetry, and expression played a significant role in giving voice to the people. For this series, I have composed a total of six songs, three of which I have sung myself.”
