Amit Shah to Review India-Bangladesh Border Security in Tripura

Agartala, June 2: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will visit Tripura from June 4 to 5. During his visit, he will assess the preparations of the Border Security Force (BSF) and other agencies to address various challenges along the India-Bangladesh border.

A senior official stated that after chairing the 73rd plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) in Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, Minister Shah will arrive in Agartala on Thursday evening.

During his stay in Tripura, Shah will hold a high-level meeting with officials from the BSF and other security agencies to review issues related to the India-Bangladesh border. Prior to the meeting, he will visit select locations along the border in West Tripura district to personally assess the current situation.

During his tour of the Bangladesh border, the Home Minister will lay the foundation stone for several infrastructure projects, participate in a plantation campaign, and attend a military conference. He will also inaugurate a hotel project, which is being developed in collaboration with the Tripura government and a private entity.

The Tripura government, BSF, and West Tripura district administration are making extensive preparations for the Home Minister’s two-day visit to the state.

Tripura shares a long border of 856 kilometers with Bangladesh and is surrounded by the country on three sides, making it a sensitive area from a security perspective. Except for approximately 21 kilometers of rugged terrain, most of the international border is fenced to prevent smuggling, infiltration, cross-border crimes, and the movement of hostile elements.

A senior BSF officer noted that surveillance and monitoring along the international border have significantly increased since unrest erupted in Bangladesh in June-July 2024, particularly following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government on August 5, 2024.
