Heavy Rain Causes Flood-Like Conditions in Silchar and Srimanta, Assam

Guwahati, May 15: Heavy rainfall in Assam has led to flood-like conditions in urban areas of Silchar and Srimanta. Officials reported that significant downpours on Friday resulted in inundation in parts of the Cachar district’s Silchar and some areas of Srimanta district.

Low-lying regions in Cachar, Srimanta, and Hailakandi districts have been submerged due to the continuous rain, disrupting normal life and vehicular movement. Streets in Silchar are under water, causing severe traffic jams in several areas.

Authorities noted that the overflowing drains have also resulted in waterlogging in various parts of Srimanta city. Tragically, one person reportedly died after coming into contact with live wires during the rainfall in the waterlogged area. The police are investigating the incident.

More rainfall is expected in the region over the next few hours, prompting local authorities and disaster management teams to remain on high alert. The India Meteorological Department has indicated that cloudy conditions will persist in many parts of Assam, with light to moderate rain likely to continue.

The regional meteorological center in Guwahati reported that clouds bringing rain to the northeastern region remain active. Rainfall data released by the IMD on Friday showed significant rainfall in Guwahati and surrounding areas.

The highest recorded rainfall was 50.5 mm in Rupnagar, Guwahati, since Thursday morning, while 21.5 mm was recorded in the downtown university area and 19.5 mm at Guwahati University. Kamrup district’s Hajo saw 15.5 mm of rain, and 18 mm was recorded in Sualkuchi.

The IMD’s ‘nowcast’ bulletin on Friday indicated a “high likelihood” of one or two rounds of moderate rain in various parts of Assam.

Officials stated that the state administration is closely monitoring the situation in the districts of the Barak Valley, especially in sensitive urban areas prone to sudden flooding and waterlogging.
