New Delhi, June 7: Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi arrived in New Delhi this morning to participate in the 8th India-Indonesia Joint Commission Meeting. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) warmly welcomed Minister Marsudi, stating, “Foreign Minister Marsudi and Minister S. Jaishankar will jointly chair the 8th India-Indonesia Joint Commission Meeting. Both ministers will review the strong comprehensive strategic partnership between our countries and discuss ways to further strengthen bilateral cooperation.”
This meeting serves as an important platform for both nations to review the progress of mutual cooperation. The joint commission mechanism at the level of foreign ministers was established following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in January 2001.
The previous 7th Joint Commission Meeting was held on June 17, 2022, in New Delhi, co-chaired by Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and then Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, according to the Indian Consulate in Bali.
Earlier, on May 14, Minister Jaishankar met with Foreign Minister Marsudi, where both leaders reviewed the progress of the India-Indonesia comprehensive strategic partnership and cooperation with ASEAN. This meeting took place during the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting, which Minister Jaishankar chaired on Thursday.
On social media platform X, Jaishankar expressed his happiness in welcoming Foreign Minister Marsudi, stating, “It was a pleasure to welcome Indonesia’s Foreign Minister. We reviewed our comprehensive strategic partnership and the progress of cooperation with ASEAN.”
In January 2025, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto visited India for a state visit, during which he also attended India’s 76th Republic Day celebrations as the chief guest. This visit coincided with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Indonesia.
The two countries elevated their relations to the level of a comprehensive strategic partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Jakarta in 2018, adopting a shared vision for maritime cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly strengthening ties in the defense sector.
