Jabalpur, May 29: Panic erupted in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, near Dumna Airport in the village of Gadheri when a suspicious 12-kilogram mortar bomb was discovered during excavation work. The incident occurred on a plot owned by Sunil Yadav, where construction was underway.
According to reports, around 5:30 PM on Friday, workers digging a pit for a column noticed a heavy iron object about four feet deep that resembled an old bomb. Initially, the villagers were unsure of what it was, but upon closer inspection, they identified it as having an explosive structure. The workers immediately halted their work and alerted the police. Shortly after, a police team and bomb disposal squad arrived at the scene.
Investigations confirmed that the object could potentially be a 12-kilogram mortar bomb. The area was cordoned off, and residents were advised to stay away.
Station Officer Rajkumar Khatik provided details, stating that workers were excavating for pillars on Sunil Yadav’s plot when the bomb was found, which is reported to be live. However, it has not yet been defused and is scheduled to be handled on Saturday.
The age of the bomb and how it ended up at the site remain unclear. Initial investigations suggest it may be an old military mortar bomb, but confirmation will come from a specialized team.
The police have also informed the army and senior officials about the situation. The bomb will be safely deactivated under the supervision of the bomb squad and the army. Currently, no one is allowed near the site.
